THE GORGE OF RINTOMO

This gorge, called Choireios Napi, according to Pausanias ("Vale of Pigs"; the traveler must have come across many of them when he visited the area), begins from Taygetus and ends at the Messinian Bay, at the beach of Santova. It has rich flora and interesting geological formations, such as sharp canyons, caves, steep slopes and rocks of impressive colors. Hiking in Rintomo, apart from the natural beauties, you will also see traces of human presence, which was strong here, since the gorge used to be a passage that provided access to Laconia for the people of the area: Beautifully preserved alleys and arch bridges compose an amazing landscape; you will also see the plots of land that the locals used to cultivate, as well as traces from the passage of eremites.
