Cultural heritage of Messinia

2024

The Foundation supported the excavation at ancient Iklena by professor Michalis Cosmopoulos. Moreover, the Central Archaeological Council approved the preparation of a study for the development and promotion of the archaeological site (master plan, road construction, access, restorations, maintenance), with funding already underway.

Uncovering of theater in ancient Thouria

The excavation at ancient Thouria by archaeologist Xeni Arapogianni continued with the Foundation’s support. The city’s theater is slowly coming to light, revealing the destruction the monument endured when the ancient building materials were extracted and used for the construction of rural buildings. Moreover, at the trial pits created in neighboring locations, part of the fortification wall of the ancient city came to light, as well as an exceptionally well-preserved abutment. Scattered inscribed architectural members were also discovered, originating from a magnificent public building of Hellenistic times, which should be sought in the wider area.

New significant findings at the Palace of Nestor

With the support of the Foundation, archaeologists Jack Davis and Shari Stalker continued the excavation of two Mycenaean burial mounds near the Palace of Nestor. The significant movable findings that came to light, such as gold inscribed rings, vases, and glass beads, attest to the existence of a local aristocracy as well as to Messinia’s trade relations with Crete and the Eastern Mediterranean. A monumental building of the middle Mycenaean period was also discovered, which contained a decorated bank of offerings as well as vessels for ceremonial purposes. An important uniform archaeological site is now coming to life, together with the burial mound, the Palace, and the Warrior’s Tomb.
