Kalamata International Dance Festival

2015

The Captain Vassilis & Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation is an avid supporter of the Kalamata International Dance Festival.

The Festival is one of the most important activities of the city’s International Dance Center. It was established in the spring of 1995 with the aim of promoting dance as an art, and it is structured around the foundations of research, education, and artistic production.

Throughout the years, and thanks to the support of the local authorities, the Festival has managed to gain its own unique place as well as recognition among similar festivals in the southern Mediterranean, building bridges with global choreographic creation.

The Festival helped introduce to the Greek audience some very important creators associated with the history of contemporary dance; it also contributed to the promotion and reinforcement of Greek creation either through the assignment of choreographic work to talented creators, or by supporting the experimental pursuits of new groups.

Key to the Festival are the educational dance seminars, as well as the workshops and lectures aimed at students and professionals in the field. The Festival’s parallel activities include publications and video dance productions.

From the very beginning, crucial factors to the Festival’s organization policy were the diversity of trends that permeate contemporary dance and the efforts to bring this art form to a wider audience. Today, after more than two decades of existence, the Festival is still received with great enthusiasm every summer by an incredibly diverse audience.
