PRESERVATION OF THE FIG TREE'S GENETIC MATERIAL, AS PART OF CREATING A PILOT FIELD
2016
DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this project is to create a pilot field using the 100 different fig tree varieties kept at the Olive Department of the “Dimitra” Greek Agricultural Organization in Kalamata, in order to preserve their genetic material. The aim of the project is to create a new, organized fig orchard, which will help in the diffusion of fig cultivation and the development of a primary sector in the wider area by:

a) carrying out experiments on the systematic study of the various fig varieties’ characteristics, and
b) using the fig orchard as an exhibition area, with the aim of acquainting the interested parties with the existing varieties and their characteristics.

Finally, the fig orchard will act as an advertisement for foreign visitors to Messinia of one of the most significant local products since ancient times.
