THE DUNES OF KYPARISSIA
Situated in western Peloponnese, in the area that extends from Cape Katakolo to Cape Kounelos, on the Ionian coast, lies a zone of special natural beauty and ecological significance: Across many kilometers extends a beautiful sandy beach, which is better known for its many sand dunes. The coast of western Peloponnese is exposed to the open sea and consequently to the prevailing southwest winds, which play a decisive role in the creation and development of sand dunes, whose height varies between 1 and 10 m. above sea level. The sand dunes of Kyparissia have been included in the Natura 2000 Network, with code GR2550005, owing to the rare vegetation of the area, and also because it is a breeding and nesting ground for the Caretta caretta sea turtle.
