“MESSINIAN GASTRONOMY FESTIVAL” BY THE “CAPTAIN VASSILIS & CARMEN CONSTANTAKOPOULOS” FOUNDATION

The “Captain Vassilis & Carmen Constantakopoulos” Foundation, in collaboration with the Messinian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Kalamata School of Tourism, and with the support of the “Brigada” group of nutrition professionals, is organizing for the seventh consecutive year the “Messinian Gastronomy Seminars,” which will take place at Costa Navarino, on 13-16 November 2019, free of charge.

The aim of the Festival is to promote and establish Messinia’s culinary tradition, and to reinforce the promotion and use of local products. The Festival is primarily aimed at professional cooks, chefs, restaurant and hotel owners as well as everyone involved in the industry, in one way or another.

The first two days of the “Messinian Gastronomy Festival” (13-14 November) will feature talks by gastronomy and tourism professionals; moreover, there will be culinary art workshops, demonstration techniques by distinguished Messinian professionals as well as food tasting.

More specifically, on November 13, Mr. Nico Bartalini will present the successful example of Toscana and the “Tinos Food Pathgroup will explain how the island’s professionals’ efforts are changing the tourist map, enhancing local food culture. Mr. Yannis Tzavlopoulos will discuss how local products constitute a region’s commercial identity and finally, members of the “Meating Greece” group will do a meat cutting demonstration.

On November 14, chef Dimitris Skarmoutsos will talk about the significance of using local products in the kitchen and how they contribute to a restaurant’s growth. Chef Dimitris Nikolis will make a historical retrospective of Messinian products, from antiquity to the present day, and discuss the evolution of gastronomy. Finally, Thomas Douzis, CEO at “ERGON,” will analyze the company’s successful example, deeming gastronomy as an important tourism product.

Friday, November 15, will be reserved for educational programs exclusively for students.

Saturday, November 16, will be reserved for talks aimed exclusively at food service professionals. The program includes a talk by Stratos Kornas, culinary arts professor, on the topic of “Education in the Restaurant Sector.” Mr. Dinos Stergidis, wine journalist and organizer of the “Oenorama” exhibition, will talk about the significance of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status in wine marketing. Finally, Ms. Athina Panou, food blogger/photographer/social media manager, will give a talk on the topic of “Restaurants and Social Media.”
