SUMMER FILM EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN

The first summer film education program for children was held with great success at the Panos and Ilias Iliopoulos Museum in Filiatra between 18 and 24 June 2023. The museum welcomed twenty students from various schools in the area, who had the opportunity to delve into the world of film through a specially designed program.
The program was designed by the “Captain Vassilis & Carmen Constantakopoulos” Foundation, in collaboration with the Audiovisual Laboratory of the Department of Communication and Media Studies, National and Kapodistrian University (NKU) of Athens, and the renowned director and professor at NKU, Eva Stefani.
More specifically, the students had the opportunity to become acquainted with Panos Iliopoulos’ photograph color grading technique, participate in a brief workshop on collage and photogram techniques inspired by his photographs, and attend theoretical and practical lessons on the use of cameras, microphones, sound recording devices, and filming/editing. The children were introduced to the basic elements of film and documentary, for example directing, camera and sound recording, and participated in screenplay, filming and editing workshops, with the final aim to produce their own documentaries. Moreover, they had the opportunity to make use of the museum’s valuable photographic archives and to converse with locals, using various video techniques to record short and long stories recounting the evolution of the area across time. At the end of the program, four documentaries were produced, with themes and material that emerged from the students during the program; the documentaries will be screened at various festivals around Greece.
The summer education program was created on the initiative of the 'Captain Vassilis & Carmen Constantakopoulos" Foundation, following a longstanding collaboration with Oxbelly, the nonprofit founded by producer Christos V Konstantakopoulos. Oxbelly holds distinct, innovative labs every year in Messinia for Greek and international storytellers in film, television and literature - dedicated to intercultural dialogue through exchanges of ideas, deepening of craft and broadening of artistic horizons.
