The “Captain Vassilis and Carmen Constantakopoulos” Foundation has organized an open seminar entitled “Sustainable Rural Development in Messinia,” which will take place on Friday, May 16, at 17:30, at the conference center of the “Elite” hotel in Kalamata.

As part of the actions that aim to establish Messinia as the prime example of sustainable agricultural development, the “Captain Vassilis and Carmen Constantakopoulos” Foundation will present the complete and updated plan on sustainable rural development carried out by IOBE (Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research) and funded by the Foundation. The plan will be presented alongside the results of the research on Messinian local varieties, which was carried out by the Agricultural University of Athens, and was also funded by the Foundation. In addition, the new Common Agricultural Policy will be presented, as well as the potential of contract farming. This overall approach will offer practical and useful knowledge to the farmers and agricultural professionals in Messinia, regarding the developments and new prospects in the agricultural field; moreover, it will be a vital source of information for the relevant services, in order for them to carve out a more specific rural development plan, based on the new facts concerning agriculture in Messinia.

Keynote speakers: Mr. Mellas Dimitris, Secretary General of Agricultural Policy and International Relations; Mr. Tsakanikas Aggelos, Assistant Professor at the NTUA, and IOBE Research Director; Mr. Maniatis George, Senior Researcher at the Unit of Sectoral Studies at IOBE; Ms. Drosinou Julia, Head of the Department of Production and Utilization of Crop Products, Ministry of Rural Development and Food; Dr. Thanopoulos Roikos, Head of the Agricultural University of Athens' Farm Unit; Mr. Ioannis Papadopoulos, General Manager of the Piraeus Bank; and Mr. Ioannis Zacharis, Contract Banking Manager of the Piraeus Bank.
