EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM “PROMOTING THE QUALITY OF OLIVE OIL THROUGH SENSORY ANALYSIS”

The educational program “Promoting the quality of olive oil through sensory analysis”, which is addressed to secondary education students of Messinia, is being implemented for a second consecutive year. The Captain Vassilis Foundation initiated the program in collaboration with the International Olive Council and the support of the Kalamata Olive Oil Taste Laboratory of the Technological Educational Institute of Peloponnese. Within these two years more than 250 students of Messinia have had the opportunity to experience olive oil tasting and learn about olive oil quality.

The main purpose of the program is to teach students how olive oil quality is associated with all the life stages of the olive tree and olive fruit, i.e. from the cultivation practices to processing and bottling. Special attention is given to understanding how our senses are tools for gathering reliable information. Olive oil tasting has been adjusted to accommodate the educational needs of students. The educational program will continue until the end of the school year and aspires to train as many students as possible on the value and production process of olive oil.

The Captain Vassilis Foundation aims to offer the program at different locations every year – last year it was in Kalamata, this year in Pylos – for easier access by schools of the wider region of Messinia.
